Reporting Tools and Practices

Today’s volatile financial markets are motivating buy-side clients to investigate their portfolio holdings with increased frequency while demanding greater transparency and a broader range of information. In this research we’ll highlight industry practices supporting both internal and external reporting, as well as the processes and systems available to support standard and custom reporting and the use of portals for delivering timely information to clients.

Supporting Cash Management

Accurate information on current and forecast cash positions is essential for investment decision making and compliance with regulations and client mandates. In this research we look into leading practices supporting cash management: the processes and systems around notification of events and cash movements, cash reporting, forecasting and reconciliation for single and multi-currency portfolios.

Reconciliation Systems

Complete and accurate data is a central requirement of processes, from investment decisions to performance, analytics, risk and regulatory reporting. Reconciliation is a key process in achieving quality data, as well as one of the means of detecting errors early in the trade lifecycle. In this research we evaluate leading reconciliation solutions that automate the processes of gathering and matching data from disparate sources, support the management of exceptions and their resolution, and assist with continuous process improvement by analysing and reporting on the causes of errors.

Managing Liquidity and Trade Execution

The growth in electronic trading over the last decade has meant that asset managers are much less dependent on the sell side for access to liquidity. Today’s buy side trader has direct, unfettered access to complex global markets via a myriad of tools. This research will review systems and practices relating to trade execution management (EMS and OMS), transaction cost analysis, and electronic execution venues.

Transaction Management, Post Trade Processing and Reconciliation

As economic and regulatory pressures drive the need for efficiency, firms seek solutions to increase automation and move to exception-based processing. This research will focus on two areas of transaction management: post-trade systems and services, and reconciliation systems. We will provide a review of systems and services available to assist in post-trade processing across asset classes, including confirmation / affirmation, matching and settlement systems, settlement instruction databases and networks. In addition, we will evaluate leading systems and services that support reconciliation between the manager's records and those of their custodians and counterparties.

Investment Accounting Systems

Legacy portfolio accounting systems may no longer be adequate to support the demands of alternative investments, new regulation and expanded lines of business. Firms seek more robust, enterprise accounting systems that provide multi-currency requirements, sub-ledger entries, hedging capabilities, and regulatory reporting. This research topic will provide a detailed review of the leading accounting systems that support traditional asset managers, insurance firms, mutual funds and hedge funds.
